First of all I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who submitted pictures for the fall birds contest! There were 119 submissions in total from around the world. I was blown away by the variety and the quality of birds!
To make for a fair decision-making process, I ended up using a panel of 3 judges + myself to narrow down the field into 1st, 2nd and 3rd place plus 3 honorable mentions. We had an incredibly tough decision!
Enjoy these fabulous fall birds and please check out the photographer’s galleries for more amazing photographs.
Barred Owl taken in Domaine de Maizerets, Quebec City, Canada
Photographer: Jean Verret
This photograph definitely has the “wow” factor I was looking for of a bird in the fall colours. Barred Owls are notoriously difficult to find, so to get one perfectly focused in among the orange fall leaves is amazing.

Red-breasted Nuthatch taken in Greenwich, CT, USA
Photographer: Jesse Gordon
I was blown away by the crispness and amazing sharp focus of every detail in this photograph. The composition is also fantastic with a Red-breasted Nuthatch perching on some acorns, perfect for the fall theme.

Pectoral Sandpipers taken at the Nonquon Lagoon, Port Perry, Ontario, Canada
Photographer: Mark Advincula
I liked the ethereal quality to this photograph with beautiful shorebirds in nice soft lighting. The reflections with the fall colours are also absolutely stunning.
