‘Tis the holiday season! And to mark the occasion, I compiled a guide to the best gifts for birders and photographers. I always struggle to find new and interesting gift ideas, so I’ve done the work for you. If you have a birder or bird photographer on your list, there are plenty of ideas here.
Many of these products are ones that I use and love. I’ve also included items that are on my wish list (Santa, I hope you’re reading this!).
I chose gifts that are within a reasonable budget (most are under $50).
The gifts are organized into the following sections
Gifts for Birders
-Books & Magazines About Birding
-Fun Birding Items
Gifts for Bird Photographers
Coffee Table Birding and Photography Books
Gift prices listed below are in USD and come from Amazon.com. If you live in Canada or the UK, you will be redirected to the appropriate Amazon for your region. Prices will vary region to region. If a gift isn’t available in your area, Amazon will suggest a similar product.
Gifts For Birders
Books & Magazines About Birding
The books and magazines in this section aren’t field guides. They are books written by birders about their experiences in the field – whether it’s a big year, tips about birding or the simple joy of observing birds.
Birding Without Borders: An Obsession, a Quest, and the Biggest Year in the World – I just finished reading this book by Noah Strycker about his quest to be the first person to see more than half the world’s species in one year. I absolutely adored it!

Good Birders Don’t Wear White: 50 Tips From North America’s Top Birders – A collection of essays written by top birders like David Sibley, Tim Gallagher, Kenn Kaufman, Don & Lillian Stokes and more.

Many birders already own a general field guide for their region. Instead, I’ve chosen a selection of specialist guides (but check your birder’s bookshelf before ordering!).
The Crossley ID Guide: Raptors (The Crossley ID Guides) – Crossley ID guides are different to any other field guide I’ve seen. They use photographs to portray bird species in unique ways – creating lifelike scenes with many species on the same page!

The Shorebird Guide – An excellent field guide for any birder looking to get serious about shorebird ID.
Cost: $19.51 Amazon
National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America, 7th Edition – This is the one general field guide that I’ve included on my gift list. It only came out a few months ago, so it might be a wish list item for a birder on your gift list!

The Backyard Birdsong Guide Eastern and Central North America: A Guide to Listening – Being able to ID birds by their songs presents a challenge for many birders. This is Cornell’s best-selling audio field guide to common North American birds.
